Some Thoughts on Jellyfish

  • Jamee:

I'm watching "I Shouldn't Be Alive" while I'm sewing and I'm thinking 'sure it's midnight, and I'm making felt shorts for flying monkeys, but at least I haven't been treading water off the coast of Costa Rica for the past nine hours, getting stung by a school of jellyfish'. Perspective.

  • Chaely:

Pound for pound, jellyfish are some of the jerkiest creatures of the sea.

  • Jamee:

So true. I am watching the series on Netflix and that was the second 'lost at sea' victim and the *other* one was also attacked by jellyfish. People worry about sharks, but clearly, the true menace of the sea is jellyfish.

  • Chaely:

I think what makes them so insidious is that in their latent state they're still a threat. They can just be bobbing around minding their own business & sting you. They can be dead & their gross bodies can deteriorate into pieces & those can sting you. Their eggs can float by & sting you. They can wash up on shore & dry up & sting you. OH AND THEY'RE BASICALLY CLEAR. And NONE of those scenarios include the moments when they actually cop an attitude & consciously decide to attack you. It's all pretty rude. At least if a shark is gonna eat you it's part of the food chain & you can't really hate on that because after all, you ARE lower on the totem pole. Jellyfish have no excuse. Dropping a tentacle & letting it float about the ocean to be a menace isn't benefiting anyone.
