Today the person driving behind me honked angrily as I was making a moderate-speed right turn off of an icy main road, into a parking lot, with my turn signal on.
Yesterday I walked by a homeless man on my way into a store & gave a smile instead of change (I only had large bills & was planning on keeping my change in my hand on my way out of the store so he could have it, not that I owed him anything) shouted after me that I was pretentious for walking past him. The irony is that as I approached him I had been talking to my friend about the homeless man I befriended over the summer & how much I still think of him & wish I knew where he was this winter.
Here’s the thing.
If people act decently toward you & you still treat them like assholes, you’ll never be satisfied. Maybe 2012 is the year we can all start picking our battles a little more wisely.
It’s not about economic class or status. It’s not about religion or politics. It’s about looking around & realizing that you don’t need to take your daily frustrations out on the people around you who are just trying to get through life without doing anyone any harm.
Have some patience.
Let people help you but don’t act like they owe you anything.
Lay off the car horn & suck up the extra 3 seconds a slow right turner costs you on your commute.
Apologize when you screw up instead of making up excuses.
AND FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD & PANCAKES IN THIS WORLD BE NICE.
